The Hamblen County Schools Migrant Education Program is designed to meet the
needs of migrant students and families in Hamblen County. Migrant families
are those families who moved within the last three years for the purpose
of obtaining employment in agriculture or fishing. Frequent moves place
migrant students at high-risk for failure and migrant education programs
are designed to remove barriers to school enrollment, attendance, and
achievement of migrant children.
Hamblen County Migrant Education funds are used
in several areas.
-
Three
part-time migrant teaching assistants work directly with
migrant children
in schools under their classroom
teacher’s supervision.
-
Migrant Education funds are merged with other
funds to provide a summer program for ELL students, which includes
migrant students.
-
Hamblen
County employs a part-time Migrant Recruiter/Coordinator, Juan
Cervantes. Juan has office hours at the HCBOE
office building Tuesday through Friday each week. Juan can
be reached by phone at 586-7700 ext. 19 or by email at jcervantes@hcboe.net.
Juan is available to assist migrant families and the school
personnel who work with migrant students and families.
