Purpose of Program
The
fundamental purpose of Adult Basic Education in the Hamblen County
School
System is the elimination of adult
illiteracy. According to the 1990 Census Bureau report, the population
of Hamblen County adults aged 25 and older is 31,194. Adults aged
25 and older who have not earned a high school credential
number 10,000-plus or approximately 34 percent of that population.
Since the 1990 census report, our community has had a growth rate
of 5.6 percent.
Of
that particular interest is the non-white population growth.
Hamblen County
has a non-white population of approximately 10 percent. The African-American
community is no longer the county's
largest minority; the Hispanic community is the largest with 7
percent, compared to 3 percent for the African-American population.
Demographics
Situated in the Lakeway Region, surrounded by lakes
and mountains, Hamblen County is an urban community, population
of 53,341, with high employment. The current unemployment rate
is 5.1 percent.
