Hillcrest Elementary
English Language Learners and After School Tutoring Programs
"Knowledge is power!"
English learning children are hard at work.
Hispanic children and other children who do not typically speak English in the home often suffer from a language barrier. These children may be more at risk academically. To help these students, an after school tutoring program focusing on language arts and math was implemented at Hillcrest Elementary.
English pronounciation, reading comprehension, and math is stressed during these tutoring sessions. Technology is used to assist children in becoming more proficient in English, reading, and mathematics.
Using technology to assist in learning.
Tutoring sessions are available Monday thru Friday at Hillcrest Elementary in cooperation with Douglas Cherokee Economic Authority, a nonprofit organization. Hispanic or other English learning children are given first priority as space is limited.
Kindergarten, first, and second graders attend tutoring on Monday and Wednesday. Third, fourth and fifth graders attend Tuesday and Thursday. The tutoring sessions last from 3:00 to 5:30 with bus transportation available.
Friday is enrichment day with all tutoring students from grades Kindergarten thru fifth grades invited to attend. Special activities are planned on this day which include science experiments, art, and visits from various speakers. Parents are required to pick up students on Fridays as bus transportation is not available.
Mentors from the community are vital member's of this program's success. These volunteers share their time and talents with children as they help with homework, read, speak, play games, build relationships, and encourage children's hopes and dreams. Most volunteers assist with the same child for two years.
