Hillcrest Elementary

The fifth grade teachers at Hillcrest include Donna Carlyle, Eric Gilbert, Charlotte Kilgore, and Shane Dowdney. The picture above was taken during a field trip to a civil war reinactment in Hamblen County.

Mrs. Donna Carlyle is the current coach of the Hillcrest Scholar's Bowl team and grade level chairperson / Title I representative. She enjoys the fact that everyday is different in teaching and the feeling she gets when children finally figure things out. Mrs. Carlyle is married to her husband, Bob and has two sons -- Brent and Chris who are each graduating from college with degrees in biology.

Mr. Eric Gilbert is the school's drama coach and representative. He enjoys seeing children being successful. When not teaching he enjoys reading, writing poems and stories, hiking, sports, going to church, and spending time with his family.

Mrs. Charlotte Kilgore loves to see a student begin to believe in themself. She has been married to her husband Matt for 21 years and has a daughter named Lydia, and two sons -- Jonathan and Josh. When she's not teaching, Mrs. Kilgore enjoys hiking, swimming, math, reading, and gardening.

Mr. Shane Dowdney (or "Mr. D" as he is often called) is a new addition to the fifth grade team and to Hillcrest. "I really enjoy when the light bulb goes on and the look that kids show when someting finally clicks for them," says Mr. Dowdney. When not teaching he enjoys spending time with his wife and four children, doing cross-stitch, hiking, and reading. He is also the girls' assistant basketball coach and a die-hard Georgia Bulldogs fan.
