Special Education Department
The West View Special Education Department is currently
served by three full time teachers and four teaching assistants. Resource
students are served by two teachers full time and
a teaching assistant. The Extended Resource Class (full time special
education) is served by one full time teacher and three teaching assistants.
The special education
enrollment at West View is about 60 students, or almost 10% of the school's
population.
Resource Program
Most of West View's Special Education students are
in the Resource program. This is a program for children with learning disabilities,
health or physical impairments, or any other certified disability. The
student may be served on a consultation basis or though direct service.
A student on consultation is not involved in any Resource classes but may
receive modifications within the regular classroom. A student receiving
direct service may attend up to four pull-out Resource classes a day. Resource
classes are used to supplement regular classes such as English, Mathematics,
Reading, or American History. The goal of the Resource program
is to focus on and improve the identified areas of need, either academic
or behavioral, for each individual. Students are provided with a learning
environment which consists of small group instruction (average of 7 - 8 students
per class) and instruction closer to the student's present level of functioning.
Individualized goals addressing academics and/or
behavior are developed annually for each student in the Resource program.
Extended Resource Program
This self-contained special education class serves children
ages eleven to fourteen. These students have various handicapping conditions
including autism, behavioral problems, emotional disturbance, learning
disabilities, and mental retardation. Students are instructed in all academic
areas and are mainstreamed into regular physical education and related
arts classes when appropriate. Special emphasis is on training in prevocational
skills including self care, cooking, and crafts. Vocational goals ledto
this class's entry into a national contest that resulted in over $32,000
being donated to local charities. The variousprojects
completed in this class prove that dreams can come true with imagination
and lots of hard work!
