One Indian Path

Morristown, Tennessee 37813

West View Middle School was established as part of the Hamblen County School System in 1972.

The original building was an open-spaced non graded facility which saw many awards and changes in the twenty-nine and a half years it was used. In January, 2001, West View moved into its present new building with all enclosed, individual classrooms. The old building has been remodeled to house elementary students.

Student enrollment at West View is about 575. The sixth, seventh, and eighth graders enjoy a curriculum of academic and related arts subjects as well as opportunities for participating in many before and after school activities.

Administration, Faculty, and Staff

The administration, faculty, and staff of West View includes the following:

Academic Curriculum

Academic classes offered for all students include Mathematics, Science, English, Social Studies, Reading, and Spelling. These classes are based on the Tennessee State Curriculum. If you would like to see a description of any of these classes click on one of the grades below:

The classes for English Language Learners (ELL)have included students whose first language is Spanish, Japanese, or Russian.

Special Education

Special Education Programs include Resource and an Extended Resource class.

Technology

Each academic classroom is equipped with a "teacher station computer". In most classrooms, this computer can be connected to a large TV for instruction. All computers are networked for access to the Internet and to software available on the school's file server.

Two computer labs have been made available in the new building. One contains older student stations that were previously located in math classrooms. These Macintosh LC 520's are networked, giving students access to much of the software on the server. The second lab was equipped with 26 iMacs purchased with school funds several months after moving into the building. (Thanks to the PTO for helping raise the funds.) A printer for this lab was obtained through Ingles receipts. These iMacs are also networked, and Internet access is available as well as various software.

Networked computers are also located in the library. The card catalog can be accessed from any computer in the building, and students and staff check out books using a computer. Some of the library's computers were provided by the school system, and others were earned with receipts from Food City.

Related Arts Curriculum

Related Arts offers a variety of exploratory courses for students. Each class, except band, meets daily for nine weeks. All students except those in band take four of these classes. Related Arts classes include Art, Keyboarding, Technology Education, Teen Living, Choral Music, and Band.

Physical Education

Physical Education at West View Middle School includes a a variety of organized and leisure time skill activities. Some of these activities are volleyball (indoor and outdoor), soccer, angleball, folk and square dance, line dancing, track and field, frisbee golf, and pickleball. Fitness is emphasized. Many West View students achieve the National and President's Fitness awards.

Guidance

West View Middle School’s Guidance Office maintains an open door policy. Students, parents, and staff may contact the office at anytime. The main focus of this department is to address the very unique concerns of middle school students. The office is staffed with a certified School Counselor who assumes many roles such as fostering academic and social development of students, enrolling new students, sending and receiving transcripts, testing, and working closely with teachers, administrators, special services, and community agencies to provide information and support necessary for a positive middle school experience. Individual counseling is done through referrals often from parents, school personnel, and students themselves. The counselor adheres to a strict referral policy regarding serious issues. Topics such as study skills, educational and career goals, decision-making, and social development are often addressed in group settings. The Guidance Office is open during regular school hours (7:50-3:20). Items may faxed directly to the Guidance office at (423) 585-3845.

Student Activities

Clubs and organizations of all kinds are available for interested students. Some of these are Junior Beta ClubFCA, Recycle Club, Art Club,Aerospace Club,Scholars Bowl, and4-H.

School sports that West View students enjoy include football, basketball, cheerleading, cross country, tennis, track, volleyball, and wrestling.

There is a new program at West View -- Forensics. This is a chance for students to compete in events surrounded by different genres of literature and theatre.

Parent Involvement

Parent volunteers help out with various things around the school. Parents have helped with paperwork in the classroom or at the office. They have typed hundreds of student names into computer programs for teacher and student use. Information for thousands of library books has been entered into the new computer card catalog system. Hundreds of thousands of dollars of Food City and Ingles receipts have been counted to help West View get additional computers and other equipment. Items have been laminated for use in classrooms. Parents organize the monthly school newsletter. Snacks have been provided for students at break time during standardized testing. A school store and an annual book fair are possible because of parent volunteers. Parents also work the concession stands at ball games, help chaperone students at school dances, and make the annual fund raiser a success. The PTO has been very active in coming up with other great projects.

Special Recognition for Students

Throughout the school year students receive recognition for various achievements. At the end of the year, all of these students are recognized in an awards program attended by many parents. Some of the achievements for which students are honored include:
