Welcome to First Grade!

We are excited about a new group of students coming to first grade.  Below is a list of supplies that your child will need the first full day of school.  We are sending this list now so that you may purchase the items at your convenience over the summer.  You may want to purchase extra pencils, crayons, and glue sticks to keep at home for later dates.  Students tend to need these items about every 6-8 weeks, and you may find some really good back to school sales that will help cut expenses in the long run.

Supply List

___backpack or tote bag (No backpacks on wheels)

___school box (approximately 5" x 8")

___2 Jumbo Elmer's glue sticks

___3  #2 pencils (Avoid plastic coated pencils which do not sharpen well.)

___1 large rubber eraser

___1 pocket folder

___1   4 oz. bottle of Elmer's glue

___1 box of 16 or 24 crayons

___Fiskar scissors (These scissors last.  The handle doesn't crack or break.)

___1 ruler (Please purchase a ruler in which the edge is the zero mark.  Some rulers have a space at the beginning then the zero or beginning mark.  Please do not purchase lighted rulers, folding rulers, etc.)

Please do not purchase trapper keepers, mechanical pencils, manuscript tablets, or pencils sharpeners.  School fees will be $12.00.  We also ask $5.00 for special art projects that we do throughout the year.  We order several craft kits for special holidays and also do several Christmas crafts.  Please have cash to pay these on registration day.  The office is no longer accepting checks.

Before coming to first grade, your child needs to know all upper and lowercase letters of the alphabet, be able to recognize the four basic shapes (square, rectangle, triangle, and circle), be familiar with rhyming words (like cat, mat, hat, rat, and pig, jig, fig), be able to write their first and last name correctly with only the beginning letters capitalized, and know their address and phone number.

Please review the following word lists with your child, also.

We will add these to the list the first of school.

We will do several assessments at the beginning of school.  One assessment is the Dolch Sight Word Test.  Students have to recognize and read sight words immediately.  If a student sounds out a word, it does not count any points.  You may wish to view these word lists prior to first grade.  You can find the lists on several Internet sites by doing a search for Dolch Sight Words. We will test the students in the fall, winter, and spring on these words to make sure they are making progress.  There are 220 common sight words and 90 common nouns.  Many of the kindergarten words are mixed throughout the lists.  However, students do not always recognize the words when they are mixed in with other words.  We are mentioning this now to give you an idea of what's coming in first grade.

We are looking forward to working with your child!
