Arnold W Bunch
Arnold W. “Arnie” Bunch, Jr. currently serves as the Superintendent of Hamblen County
Schools, a role he began in 2022. A native of Hamblen County, Mr. Bunch now leads a district comprising 18 schools, serving approximately 10,000 students, and employing 1,700 staff members. Before transitioning to education leadership, Gen. Bunch served an esteemed career in the United States Air Force, retiring as a four-star general. In his final military assignment, he commanded the Air Force Materiel Command at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. There, he oversaw nearly 89,000 personnel and managed a $60 billion annual budget, directing all aspects of research, development, testing, acquisition, and sustainment for major Air Force weapon systems. Commissioned in 1984 after graduating from the U.S. Air Force Academy, Gen. Bunch completed pilot training in 1985 and served operationally as an instructor, evaluator, and aircraft commander for the B-52 Stratofortress. After graduating from the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School, he contributed to developmental testing for both the B-2 Spirit and B-52 aircraft, and later served as an instructor pilot. His distinguished military career included command roles at the squadron, group, wing, and center levels, and a key leadership position as the Military Deputy to the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics at the Pentagon.
Mr. Bunch is married to the former Ms. Caroline Jones, also from Hamblen County. Together, they have two sons, a daughter-in-law, and two granddaughters.
