We have an absenteeism problem.

We have too many students that fall into the "chronically absent" category. Chronically absent means a student is missing 10% or more of school days due to absence for any reason -- excused, unexcused, or suspensions.

Daily attendance matters. The Hamblen County Department of Education's mission is to educate all students so they can achieve their post secondary and career goals. If students aren't in school, we can't educate or prepare them for the future. Daily attendance goes beyond academic success and contributes to the development of social and emotional skills such as listening, paying attention, problem-solving and self-regulation, all of which are needed to grow and learn.

We are placing additional focus on absenteeism. We will work this in partnership with community leaders, community organizations and the judicial system to improve our attendance rates.
