HCDOE Guidelines for Donating Computer/Computer Equipment

The Hamblen County Department of Education appreciates community donations of computers and computer equipment . However, it is not always in the best interest of the school system to accept donated computers/computer equipment. These computers often require additional expenditures of time, money, and resources for the school or the school system.

For this reason, schools are encouraged to accept only those donations that facilitate the school and district's technology plan, are compliant with the school's computing platform, and can become viable with minimal expenditures. Donated computers must meet minimum system requirements in order to be donated and supported by Department of Instructional Technology. These requirements should indicate that the equipment is not more than three years old and will remain useful in the classroom for a reasonable period of time.

Current minimum system requirements include:

Macintosh Platform

  • Intel Processor with OSX (10.7 or better) with a processor speed of 2.0 GHz or faster.
  • minimum of 1 GB RAM
  • minimum 40 GB hard drive
  • 10/100 Ethernet card
  • sound capabilities

Windows Platform

Windows/Intel computers with at least a Pentium D or newer (Core Duo, Core 2 Duo, etc.) or processor capable of running Windows 7

Each computer system should have:

  • Windows 7 --2 GB of RAM
  • 40GB hard drive
  • 10/100 Ethernet card
  • sound capabilities

Donated computers should be fully functional and complete with:

  • computer
  • color monitor
  • keyboard
  • mouse
  • necessary cables

Laptop Computers

*  Any laptop meeting the above criteria

*  Laser printer that is compatible with any of the above specified equipment that is not older than 3 years old.

Note:  We do not accept inkjet printers, only laser printers.

*  Scanners that are compatible with the above

*  High quality, flat-screen, color monitors compatible with any of the above CPU, and capable of 1024 X 768 or better screen resolution

If your equipment meets or exceeds these minimum requirements, please contact the school directly to make your donation. If you do not have a specific school in mind, you may contact the Department of Instructional Technology. Also, be sure to remove all your personal files from your hard drive before offering a computer for donation; include documentation and installation CDs for system software; and be prepared to provide the recipient full rights concerning the use and disposal of the computer. A letter of receipt may be requested from the school/district for tax purposes. This letter may contain a list of the donated items, but will not specify a dollar value for your gift.
